A man who was struck by a vehicle outside of The Phil’s Tavern on Butler Pike last week has died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident, Wissahickon Now has learned.

Police were dispatched to the 900 block of Butler Pike in Whitemarsh Township at 8:02 p.m. on March 26 for a report of a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian struck. Arriving personnel located a red Mercury Montego with a shattered windshield and a man suffering from a bleeding head wound.

Several employees from the tavern told Wissahickon Now they heard a commotion and screaming outside, then rendered aid to the man once they saw him lying in the street. The man, identified by police as 81-year-old George Boyd, of Plymouth Meeting, was transported from the scene via ambulance to Abington Memorial Hospital, where he would later succumb to his wounds.

The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to Whitemarsh Township Police Chief Christopher Ward.

“A witness observed the victim enter the roadway from the western side of Butler Pike crossing towards the eastern side of the road,” Ward said. “The victim was observed crossing both the south bound lane and the north bound left turn lane before entering the north bound right curb lane where he was struck by the Mercury sedan.”

Butler Pike was closed between Skippack Pike and Splitrail Lane as a result of the crash, reopening approximately one hour later as crews cleared the scene. Responding units included Whitemarsh Township Police, Whitpain Township Police, Whitemarsh Ambulance, Ambler Ambulance, area fire police, and other agencies.

A joint investigation between the Whitemarsh Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office is ongoing, Ward said.
