On Saturday, the best thing to go with your Backyard Beans coffee is physical activity.

Kicking off at 8 a.m. at its Lansdale location, Backyard Beans and avid running coach and North Penn High School teacher Brittany Atkiss will host the 3-mile Backyard Run.

All ages are welcome and all paces are welcome, according to a press release from Backyard Beans. The run is capped at 20 runners.

Any runners under 18 must get parent permission to participate in the Backyard Run.

All runners get a free cold brew coffee after the run.

Backyard Beans and Atkiss said all runners are responsible for themselves and neither are liable or responsible for injuries on the course. Runners are asked to run at their own risk and must be responsible for their own gear.

Atkiss has been a dedicated runner since middle school, running in half marathons and even sprinting during the Penn Relays. According to Atkiss, she does not just enjoy running, she finds joy in running. It makes her feel empowered and boosts her mood.

To Atkiss, anyone can embrace their inner runner. She said running groups are a great way to find motivation and emotional support when you need a pick-me-up. It is all about that team aspect.

“People can meet and form connections based off two very important common interests – coffee and physical activity,” she said. “We will get our day started with a nice workout and hopefully some people will want to hang around and grab something to eat so we can chat a bit.”

“Best of all,” said Atkiss, who is a part of the Ambler Area Running Club, “new friendships can often form through a community group run.”

The next Backyard Run is tentatively planned for May 18 in Ambler Borough.
