A Montgomery County man has been arrested and charged in connection with a February crash in Norristown that killed 37-year-old Katty Campos, of Ambler.

Adan Ortiz-Gonzalez, 18, of Norristown, was charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and related offenses, after turning himself in to authorities on Tuesday. He is currently free on $50,000 unsecured bail, with the condition of no driving, according to court records.

Police allege Ortiz-Gonzalez was going at least 65 mph in a 25-mph zone on the 1600 block of northbound Dekalb Street in Norristown in his 2004 Nissan Armada SUV, with three juveniles along for the ride.

An investigation found that Ortiz-Gonzalez allegedly plowed into Campos’ car at the intersection of East Brown Street at 10:51 a.m. Feb. 26 with such velocity that it pushed her car 50 feet across the intersection, off the roadway, and into a tree on the driver’s side, according to a press release from Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.

Campos became trapped in her car and when police arrived, and she was found unresponsive, according to authorities. Once extricated from the vehicle, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ortiz-Gonzalez and his three passengers were taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries, per the release.

A crash investigation revealed Campos was traveling eastbound on East Brown Street, and slowed down but did not stop completely at a stop sign. She had just attempted to cross Dekalb Street, when her Sentra was hit on the passenger side by Ortiz-Gonzalez, police said.

An analysis conducted by county detectives determined the Sentra would have cleared the intersection had Ortiz-Gonzalez been driving at the posted speed limit, and the crash would have been avoided, according to the press release.

Campos’ cause of death was listed as multiple blunt impact injuries with fractures and visceral injuries, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Ortiz-Gonzalez is also charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment, per authorities. A preliminary hearing is set for May 3 at 10:45 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Todd N. Barnes.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
