A rash of recent car thefts and break-ins has those in the Ambler area concerned for their vehicles. According to Ambler Police Chief Jeff Borkowski, it is a good time to remember to keep your vehicles locked!

Over the weekend of Aug. 23 and 24, police reported that two vehicles were stolen from the same residence in the Ambler Borough.

“Officers responded and attempted to stop both fleeing vehicles,” said Borkowski. “The drivers ignored the officers and successfully left the area.”

The thefts are both currently under investigation by Ambler Police. In addition, personal items were removed from a parked car. This incident was also in recent days, prompting many on social media to share the news and warn their neighbors.

Residents should “be vigilant about locking their vehicle doors and maintaining key/fob security,” said Borkowski.

According the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) tracking of crime, the state averages around 165 vehicle thefts per 100,000 persons, as of 2022 statistics. With the Commonwealth’s population climbing to 12.96 million per the most recent Census estimate in July 2023, that means an average of over 21,000 cars are stolen each year in Pennsylvania.

As a reminder, and as previously announced by Wissahickon Now, the Ambler police department also offers residents free steering wheel locks in order to secure their vehicles. Simply stop by the station, located at 131 Rosemary Ave., in Ambler, for a lock, free of charge.
