It is that dusty old printer that’s been taking up space on your desk for months. It doesn’t even work, but you aren’t sure what to do with it, so there it sits. It’s that computer that quit working a year ago. You set it in the garage, where it too has been taking up space since that time. And, why on earth do we still have a VCR?
It can be tough to know what to do with yesterday’s technology when it no longer functions. Many modern appliances and devices cannot be easily fixed due to computer components, not to mention the rarity of repair shops these days. And while such products are affordable, most opt to move “out with the old” and in with the new, instead of seeking a fix just to save funds.
Most know you cannot just toss these items in your typical trash for pick-up. Instead, they must be appropriately recycled. But where and when can you do that? Those in and around Ambler are in luck.
Mark your calendars today and set any necessary reminders for yourself now. On Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon, there will be an “E-Waste Recycling Event” hosted by Rep. Melissa Cerrato (District 151) and Rep.Liz Hanbidge (District 61) to allow area residents to recycle old electronics. The event will be held at the Temple Ambler Campus, located at 580 Meetinghouse Road, in Ambler.
Whitpain Township’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) urges residents to dispose of these items in the proper way. Small appliances, printers, computers, laptops, VCRs, DVD players, wiring, metal items, and nearly any appliance without freon are welcome. The hosts cannot accept monitors, televisions, or appliances with freon. Otherwise “anything with a plus” is largely accepted.
The event will be held with The Junkluggers, a local franchise of clutter removers! The “Western Philadelphia Suburbs and Beyond” services the entire reading area.
Should you be unable to make the recycling event, the business can arrange local pick-ups for a costs, with upfront pricing estimates provided on a case-by-case basis. Call 610-651-3374 for more information on the services offered by The Junkluggers.
All devices will be wiped of any information and/or destroyed, so residents do not need to worry about any data. In fact, those dropping off items on Sept. 7 are asked to stay in their vehicles to allow the flow of traffic to continue. The event’s work staff will be happy to remove items for recycling.
Those interested in attending should come into the campus from the Butler Pike entrance and exit out on Meetinghouse Road. Cerrato’s office will also be collecting nonperishable food items to donate to the Family Promise during the recycling event.
Family Promise of Montco PA, formerly known as the Inter-Faith Housing Alliance, offers a food pantry four days per week to provide nutritious foods, household supplies, and personal care items to those in need. Locally, the food pantry operates at 2801 Woodland Road, in Roslyn, on the campus of the Salem Baptist Church. For more information on the food pantry, email food@fpmontco.org or call 267-318-0607. For any questions regarding the food collection, call Cerrato at 267-282-6695.
