Underground gas leak shuts down Five Points intersection Thursday afternoon

Montgomery Township Police have shut down the Five Points intersection in Montgomery Township Thursday afternoon due to an underground gas leak caused by an error by a construction crew.

At least eight Montgomery and Bucks county fire agencies are responding to the call, which was reported at 12:01 p.m.

According to Montgomery County emergency dispatch reports, a worker hit a gas line outside by Jiffy Lube at 392 Doylestown Road. Reports state the leak is very noisy, but the pipe is still buried underground. 

PECO is expected on scene within the hour. FDMT is conducting gas meter readings on scene near JIffy Lube and Patient First.

Fire Department of Montgomery Township is being assisted by Colmar Fire Co., Fairmount Fire Co. of Lansdale and its Fire Police, Hatfield Vol. Fire Co., North Penn Vol. Fire Co., two units from Hilltown Township Fire and Chalfont Fire Co. 

Police advised motorists to avoid the area of Five Points, if possible, as there will be significant closures and detours. 

Authorities are expected to evacuate area businesses for safety.
