More details have been released by authorities on a case that has one Chester County teen charged with felony counts of aggravated assault as he remains in county jail awaiting a preliminary hearing in January.
According to police and court documents, Devin Andrew Burns, 19, of the 500 block of Hibernia Road in Glenmoore, was the alleged shooter in a Whitemarsh Township incident on Wednesday, Nov. 13 that saw another man injured with a life-threatening gunshot wound. According to a Whitemarsh Township Police Department criminal complaint, the man “sustained life-threatening injuries from the gunshot wound but will survive.” The shot hit the man, according to police, in the front pelvis area.
The shooting took place, police said, after many teens and young adults gathered at Miles Park in the Lafayette Hill section of Whitemarsh Township. According to the criminal complaint, a crowd gathered at the park for a planned fight, as several girls were “fighting over social media postings.” Burns was the ex-boyfriend of the girl the victim was currently dating, police said.
At some point in the girls’ fight, Burns shot the man his girlfriend was now dating, which three witnesses confirmed at the scene, according to police. Burns own current girlfriend placed him at the scene the night of the shooting during interviews with police, the complaint said.
After being shot, the victim ran across Miles Park and requested help from a homeowner on Hillside Road, police said. Emergency medical crews transported him to Abington Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, according to police. According to the complaint, police were able to recover a spent 9mm shell casing in the gravel parking lot where the victim said he was shot.
As previously reported on Wissahickon Now, Burns then led state police on a chase after they reported to his Glenmoore home to make an arrest. Spanning six jurisdictions according to Pennsylvania State Police, the chase included Burns intentionally ramming an occupied police car. He was later detained, according to a police criminal complaint, and a gun was found in his vehicle, police said.
Burns, who continues to be held in county jail unable to post a $150,000 monetary bail, has had his original preliminary hearing date of Dec. 11, 2024 continued to Jan. 8, 2025 at 11 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Dara Nasatir.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
