He is the namesake of Hancock Street in Lansdale Borough and Upper Gwynedd and Montgomery townships and his childhood home stands near Costco in Montgomeryville.

And now the Historical Society of Montgomery County invites the community to learn about the life and career of our region’s famous connection to the Civil War, General Winfield Scott Hancock.

The July 3 recognition is part of a walking tour of the historic Montgomery Cemetery at 9 a.m., with stops that highlight the life of Gen. Hancock.

The cemetery tour covers General Hancock’s life and military career and the particularly important days in Gettysburg, including July 3, 1863, the day Hancock was shot and wounded during the battle.

With almost 6,000 known burials, historic Montgomery Cemetery holds the remains of some of the most prominent citizens, veterans and reformers in the county and nation.

From five Civil War generals to many captains of industry, it tells the story of the nation through the lives it represents.

The entrance to Montgomery Cemetery is at the end of Hartranft Avenue, off West Main Street, Norristown. Parking during the event will be made available inside the cemetery gates.

Tickets to this event are $10 and spots will be limited. To purchase tickets and/or RSVP contact us at 610-272-0297 or email: contact@hsmcpa.org.
