A North Carolina woman has been charged with felony counts of retail theft and receiving stolen property after she allegedly stole $3,100 of merchandise from the Kohls in Whitpain Township.

Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Skippack Pike at 8:23 p.m. on June 12 for a report of a retail theft in progress. Prior to police arrival, county dispatch indicated two female suspects were last seen leaving in a gray SUV with an unknown paper registration.

According to the criminal complaint, police located a gray Kia Sportage with an unknown paper registration near the intersection of Skippack and Dekalb pikes and initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 45-year-old Taffy Davis, of Charlotte, and her passenger — 22-year-old Jalah Davis, of Charlotte — were initially described by police as uncooperative, however they eventually stated that they had just left Kohls and began to cooperate with the investigation, police said.

The driver allegedly admitted to stealing the merchandise from the store and turned over two black bags containing $3,143.96 worth of cosmetic items that had been stolen, the report states. Store personnel were brought to the scene of the traffic stop, where they positively identified the driver as the person responsible for the theft, police said.

In addition to the felony charges, Taffy Davis was also charged with summary counts of driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance, driving on a suspended license, and misuse of plate-card (registration). She was arraigned the following morning, and is currently being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of 10% of $10,000 cash bail.

Her next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on June 27 at 10 a.m.

Court records show Jalah Davis, the passenger, was also taken into custody on an outstanding warrant at the time of the incident. The docket for that case shows she’s being held at the county jail on $25,000 cash bail.

Further review of county court records indicates misdemeanor charges of retail theft and receiving stolen property were filed against Jalah Davis on June 17 out of Hatfield Township, stemming from an incident on March 28. Bail in that case was initially set at 10% of $5,000 cash, however a bail review hearing lowered it to $5,000 unsecured.

She remains in custody on the Whitpain charge.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
