A teen was injured Thursday afternoon after they were struck by a vehicle while riding their electric scooter on Dekalb Pike in Whitpain Township.

Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Dekalb Pike at 1:04 p.m. on March 28 for a report of a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. Arriving personnel located a 15-year-old male with injuries, and a gray Jeep Cherokee with minor front-end damage.

The teen was described as conscious but in pain. Witnesses said emergency medical personnel were observed placing a neck brace on the boy before transporting him from the scene via ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Wissahickon Now photographer James Short indicated the area where the crash occurred did not have sidewalks, and the speed limit was 40 miles per hour. According to PennDOT, in order for a motorized scooter or personal mobility device to be legally operated on a roadway, it must be titled, insured, and have all necessary safety equipment including lights, fenders and turn signals.

There were minor traffic interruptions in the area as crews worked the scene, which was cleared around 1:50 p.m.

Whitpain Township Police were assisted by units from Second Alarmers Ambulance and the Centre Square Fire Company.
