The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced that utility work will continue for the next several months on three state highways at the Five-Points Intersection in Montgomery Township.
The work is being done under a $14.2 million project to improve travel and safety at the Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) intersection, commonly referred to as the Five-Points Intersection.
Motorists are advised of alternating lane closures and temporary traffic patterns on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the following locations:
• Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) between North Wales Road to McLaughlin Road
• Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road) between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road.
• Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) between Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) and Betty’s Avenue.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent, said PennDOT in a press release.
Under this intersection improvement project, PennDOT’s contractor will install additional through-lanes at the intersection approaches in both directions on Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road) and on southbound Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike). Widening of the roadway will allow for 18 travel lanes to approach the intersection, compared to the existing 15 travel lanes, to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes.
Other improvements include upgrading and retiming signalization; installing sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, and guiderail; upgrading stormwater drainage, signage, and pavement markings; adjusting driveway access, and reducing erosion sediment.
In addition, the intersection improvements on Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road) and Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike) will enhance traffic flow for westbound Route 463 (Horsham Road) motorists turning right onto northbound Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road), said the release.
