  • Things To Do

After much selection, the final setlist for the first concert has officially been finalized. And even more additions than previously planned will now be included.

The Independence Sinfonia, an orchestra founded in 1995 by musicians from throughout the Delaware Valley, was created when a group of musically talented players “from all walks of life” decided to come together, “united in the love of music. Directed by Conductor Daniel Matsukawa, the principal bassoon of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the ensemble is about to launch its very first concert of the season at the auditorium of the Learning Center at Temple Ambler.

This first concert of the season, slated for Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m., will include the following pieces:

  • Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No. 4”
  • Devienne’s “Flute Concerto No. 7” featuring soloist Patrick Williams
  • Wagner’s “Tannhauser Overture”

The program is estimated to last around 85 minutes, including a single intermission.

With a mission to “improve our individual music skills and knowledge in classical music, engage in focused and challenging rehearsals, and enrich our communities by fostering an excitement for, and enjoyment of, classical music,” accord to its website, the Independence Sinfonia has a long history of bringing such talent to the entire region. With 285 individual pieces across 95 different concerts in 27 different venues, the Independence Sinfonia has enjoyed 26 previous concert seasons. Sadly, the 2020-21 season was forced to be canceled by the pandemic. But “under the baton of six conductors and four guest conductors,” the ensemble has quite the resume.

“The orchestra has welcomed 62 soloists, including six choir/chorale groups,” said the newly created “About Us” page for the group. “Our repertoire included works of 56 composers.”

Tickets will be $20 for adults and $15 for seniors (those 65 and over). There is no charge for students (under age 25) with Student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door the night of the event. Cash, credit or debit card, or check will be accepted.
