An early morning series of car crashes had traffic on Route 309 heavily delayed as multiple lanes were forced to merge into one.

According to a report on NBC10, the crash shut down traffic on 309 Northbound in “the Ambler area” in the area of Susquehanna Road. During the morning commute, the congestion was made even more difficult when a secondary crash happened near Highland Avenue, approaching the crash scene of the first incident.

For a period of time, traffic was re-routed off of 309 Northbound in order to clear the scene, forcing drivers off at Susquehanna. Many drivers opted to exit Route 309, according to reports, which further congested traffic on back roads such as Bethlehem Pike, too.

According to the county’s dispatch system, a call went out for emergency response around 5:18 a.m. in Lower Gwynedd Township. Witnesses at the scene said that a man was out and standing next to his vehicle. Reports stated that he’d hit the center barrier. The first incident occurred between mile markers 7.7 and 7.8. The accident blocked lanes of traffic, which required additional first responders to assist.

All roadways are clear at this hour.

Responding to the scene were units from the Community Ambulance Association of Ambler, Horsham Fire Company Ambulance, Wissahickon Fire Company, Fort Washington Fire Company, and other area departments.
