If you always dreamed of living in a castle, fulfilling your fantasy to be the prince (or princess) of the world, now’s your chance. For a mere $1.5 million, you could be the new owner of Lindenwold Castle in Ambler.
Originally built as the part of the Richard Mattison estate, the 7,102 square-foot home is seeking a new owner. While it may contain a history Ambler would rather forget, this home’s gorgeous architecture, historical status, and grand rooms might just fit those dreams.
The house is up for auction, according to the Allison Wolf Real Estate Team, who said that bids are being accepted now. Its listing agent said that bids will be taken online through Dec. 19 at 4 p.m.
Mattison was originally gifted the home as part of his wedding present as it was built in 1890 to 1893. If you recognize that name, it is because he was the Mattison that, paired with partner Keasbey, sold asbestos to the world, later making Ambler’s not-so-favorite nickname and history as the “Asbestos Capital of the World.” At the time, the world was unaware of the toxic impacts of the substance, so it didn’t seem so risqué to make your fortune selling it until many, many years later.
Located on almost one full acre lot, this castle has had its fair share of upgrades to bring its interior into the modern day. Work was carefully done to maintain the historic charm. According to its listing, over $3 million has been invested into the updates since 2019
The home last sold in 2012 for $704,000. It contains six bedrooms, and four baths. During that last sale period, Photographer Kris Knight was able to capture its charm. Enjoy a photo gallery giving you a virtual mini tour of the famed castle.
