The Ambler Borough Police Department is looking for a few good men and women! Do you have what it takes?

The Ambler Borough Civil Service Commission will conduct a physical agility test and written examination on Saturday, Nov. 2 for probationary police officers. The tests will take place at Wissahickon High School, located at 521 Houston Road, in Ambler.

Registration will commence at the day’s start, between 7:30 and 8 a.m. No one will be admitted to the exams after 8 a.m. Applicants must bring a photo identification and two, No. 2 pencils.

No food, drink, or cell phones will be permitted in the testing areas. Applicants are advised to keep phones in their vehicles or at home. Those that pass the physical agility test will be permitted to stay on and immediately take the written portion of the exam.

If you are curious what it takes to pass that agility test, the standards include a full list of mobility and endurance stages. You can find extended details at the state’s site here.

The standards are set by age group, with those 18 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, or 60-plus each having its own goal point. The test, called the Certified Municipal Police Academy assessment, includes four events. To pass the components, the participant must meet the top 30th percentile. The events are held separately in each gender (with varied standards one must meet, based on gender), based on gender assigned at birth.

The cumulative test must be done within the two-hour time limit. The test ordered as:

  • Sit-ups
  • 300-meter run
  • Push-ups
  • 1.5-mile run

The MPOETC fitness standards for entrance are the same for retention. They are designed, according to the state’s website, to ensure “that all cadets are sufficiently fit to participate in the physically rigorous elements of academy training without incurring injury.”

Applicants will be given a five-minute rest time between each event. Those that wish to enroll as police academy cadets must maintain their 30th percentile physical fitness physical assessment level to continue at the academy until the completion.

Applicants on Nov. 2 should come dressed for activity. For the written exam, given to those that pass physical requirements, a score of 70 percent or higher must be obtained in order to move on in the process.

Qualifications for the exams include:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Act 120 Certified by time of appointment
  • Ability to perform duties of a police officer
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license

The preliminary applications are now available at the Ambler Borough Police Department, located at 131 Rosemary Ave., in Ambler, Pa. 19002. The application fee is $35. Cash and major credit cards are accepted for payment at the department. Checks and money orders are NOT accepted.

Preliminary applications will be accepted until Tuesday, Oct. 29.at 4 p.m. Participants that pass physical agility testing and the written exam will then be provided with a formal “PDQ” to be completed before oral interviews.
