Breaking Down the New Phillies Hype Video

  • Phillies

The Phillies and Mets played each other 1,081 times in the regular season since 1962, but not once in the postseason.

That changes on Saturday.

It's not hard to get fired up for this NLDS matchup, but that didn't stop the Phillies from posting a hype video to social media before game one. Make sure your walls are reinforced with something stronger than brick before viewing:

Let's take a deeper look at this masterpiece.

0:01 - Ok we see a car. Someone is approaching. Who could it be? A hand starts the ignition and flips on sports talk radio.

Ruining the surprise a little here, but yeah it's Harper.

0:17 - After a couple shots establishing that this video is set in the great city of Philadelphia, we get this:

Oh shit. "Red October." It's time. Flip it! Flip that fucking switch you big bastard! We're ready!!

Not yet. They're making us wait for it.

Anticipation.

0:35 - We get some more city scenes. Businesses prepping Red October-themed tomato pies and drinks. Wtf is that priest up to?

Harper is rolling through the city listening to WIP and callers are explaining why this is the year.

"I'm fired up, 'cuz listen. This whole region is gearin' up for Red October. You can feel it, it's different this year, and I'll tell you why. It's 'cuz this is our year. The wait is ooooover, the whole city knoooows it.

At 0:35 we get this:

Ok, looks like Bryce Harper is going to the ballpark, That's good, because he is supposed to play baseball today.

0:58 - The audio shifts from fans calling WIP to Phillies players discussing how they want to win the World Series. They sound serious. I believe them.

At 0:58 game footage kicks in. Harper's early-season three-HR game. The team's 40th win. Their 50th win. We hear T-Mac and Franzke and the Krukker. We see players celebrating. Matt Strahm is yelling. Ranger Suarez is dancing.

1:16 - Remember when the Phillies won the National League East? *Chris Farley voice* That was awesome.

1:18 - OH MY GOD IT'S HAPPENING

One big switch turns the lights of the city red! Boathouse row. The art museum. The whole damn skyline. Someone is screaming. "We're paintin' the town red! The city's gonna be red! The streets are gonna be red!" Presumably the streets will run red with the blood of Mr. and Mrs. Met.

1:27 - Ok, the priest just had a message for us.

1:44 - Don't mess with this team, or they will (almost) fight you. You don't want that smoke.

2:04 - Rapid-fire game highlights. Rally towel shots. More talk radio. The music builds.

Harper arrives at the park. Radio off. He stares at the camera.

"That's enough talk. Time to lock in."

Chef's. Kiss.
