Today, the Montgomery County Board of Elections authorized the expansion of satellite offices and drop boxes in advance of the 2024 General Election.
Montgomery County voters will soon have eight Voter Services satellite offices and a total of 18 secure ballot drop boxes available across the County to meet the expected demands of the November 5 Election. This is an increase from the 2024 Primary Election, which had four satellite offices and 12 drop boxes.
"By doubling the number of satellite offices and increasing the number of secure drop boxes, we’re letting all eligible voters know that voting in Montgomery County is easy, secure, and convenient," said Neil K. Makhija, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Elections. "There are still many counties across Pennsylvania that do not make any of these voter access options available. We want Montgomery County to set a standard for voter accessibility. In 2022, Montgomery County had one of the highest voter turnouts in the entire country; we want everyone to have even greater opportunity to make their voice heard in 2024.”
"We're committed to ensuring that all eligible voters in Montgomery County, regardless of their physical ability or work schedules, have an opportunity to cast their vote in the 2024 General Election," said Jamila H. Winder, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and Vice Chair of the Board of Elections. “Making voting easy, secure, and convenient is our duty as elected officials. Whether you are a homebound senior, have a busy work schedule, or simply find voting by mail a convenient way to participate in the democratic process, this expansion of voter access serves you.”
According to the Pennsylvania Department of State, as of this week, there are 617,003 registered voters in Montgomery County. With the additional drop boxes, now 50% of the County’s voting-age population will be within a five-minute drive of a secure drop box, up from 34%. Additional drop boxes will be located in Abington, Franconia, Lansdale, Lower Merion, Upper Dublin, and Whitemarsh. Drop boxes will be available 24/7 and video-monitored starting Oct. 4.
In addition to the main Voter Services office in Norristown and existing satellite offices in Willow Grove, Lansdale, Lower Merion, and Pottstown, voters will also be able to visit satellite offices in Abington, Franconia, Upper Dublin, and Whitemarsh. Appointments are not required. Voters can visit any location; satellite offices will be open several days a week from Oct. 4 to Oct. 28.
In Pennsylvania, any voter can vote by mail. Montgomery County encourages voters who would like to vote by mail to apply online. The PA Election Code permits voters to return their own ballot by mail, via drop box, or in-person at a satellite office.
Voters who have an illness or disability that will prevent them from picking up or dropping off their mail-in ballot must complete the Designated Agent form should they need to designate another person (agent) to pick up or drop off their ballot. There is also a section on the form for the agent to complete. Both the Voter section and the Designated Agent section must be completed. Completed mail-in or absentee ballots can be dropped off by the agent at an office location or secure ballot drop box and must be accompanied by the completed Designated Agent form. The form should be kept separately and not enclosed in the ballot return envelope.
