Avo Photonics, a Horsham-based manufacturer, will be adding a new location in Fort Washington
A new business is coming into 500 Virginia Drive in Upper Dublin Township. The property, which is a neighbor to the Upper Dublin Public Library, police department, and the Fort Washington Post Office, will soon be home to Avo Photonics.
Township Manager Kurt Ferguson explained the new addition to the community during the Board of Commissioners meeting last week.
“The chief and I have been meeting, to make sure we have an understanding about the parking here at the library and next door,” said Ferguson.
Avo Photonics is a designer, developer, and manufacturer of “scalable, U.S.-manufactured photonic modules and systems,” according to its website.
“Please don’t ask me to define photonics,” joked Ferguson. “I Googled it, and it is beyond my skillset.”
However complicated the work may be, the new business will bring new employment opportunities to the township.
“The good news is 300+ jobs that will be coming here,” said Ferguson, as he informed the commissioners of this updated information. “They are Horsham-based, one of the larger, top 15 to 20, employers in Horsham. They’re keeping that location.”
Ferguson said the move could begin as early as this month of September.
“So, we’re excited about that,” he said. “These are the types of, when we talk about diminishing the vacancy rate in the Fort Washington District, these things are happening, and I think they’re a big deal.”
The commissioners meeting had kicked off, just prior to Ferguson’s report, with a review of the Upper Dublin Comprehensive Plan 2025, which outlined as part of its goals, filling unused office space and repurposing or revitalizing unoccupied buildings.
