Sure, it is a commitment. But perhaps your family is ready for this new addition. You’ll watch it grow. Provide it tender loving care. And it can blossom into a beautiful and valuable asset to the community.
We’re talking about the Upper Dublin Shade Tree adoption event, of course. Registration for a free “Adopt a Tree” event began on Tuesday, Sept. 17. There are 114 “babies” awaiting a loving family.
Those interested who live in the township must fill out an online application here. Once registered, you can select among a variety of tree types, including red maple, river birch, hornbeam, hackberry, red bud, persimmon, American beech, sweet gum, tulip poplar, black gum, sycamore, white oak, scarlet oak, or black widow.
There are limits to each tree species and only one tree per Upper Dublin Township residence, business operator, or property owner is permitted. Should there be “unadopted” trees remaining, additional giveaways may be considered.
Those interested will need to pick up their tree on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Upper Dublin Library parking lot at 520 Virginia Drive, in Fort Washington. As the tree’s containers will range from three to five feet in height, residents are asked to bring transportation suitable for the size.
Once picked-up, the “adopter” will be responsible for getting the tree to its planting space and planting it in the ground.
If adopting one of your own doesn’t feel like you’re doing enough, the Shade Tree Commission also is seeking “Tree Patrol volunteers.” Such volunteers are responsible for watering, weeding, and straightening trees several time a season.
If you are interested in volunteering, go to www.upperdublinrec.net, click on Upper Dublin C.A.R.E.S and scroll down to Upper Dublin C.A.R.E.S Tree Patrol for more information.
