The Wissahickon Valley Public Library will host “Dishing Out the Facts on Mushrooms” on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ambler branch, 209 Race St., Ambler. The educational session will be presented by nutritionist Sylvia Emberger, who will discuss the health values of mushrooms, including how “delicious, edible mushrooms can be a valuable addition to your meals.” Registration for the free program is available online here. On Friday, Oct. 4, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the Centre Square Fire Company will host a Fire Expo at Wentz Run Park, 960 Wentz Road in Blue Bell. The free event is family-friendly and aims to teach all ages the dangers of fire and how to prevent them. At the expo, all attendees will be able to meet firefighters, help put out fires, and see the firefighters’ equipment up close and personal. Steps Toward a Cure, a family-focused, fun 5K/One-Mile Walk event, is slated for Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. Aimed at spreading awareness and finding a cure through the Dravet Syndrome Foundation. Dravet syndrome, sometimes also called Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy (SMEI), is a rare form of an intractable epilepsy that begins in infancy, which the Foundation says “proceeds with accumulating morbidity that significantly impacts individuals throughout their lifetime.” The event will be hosted on the grounds of the Lower Gwynedd Elementary School, located at 571 Houston Road, in Lower Gwynedd Township. On Saturday, Oct. 5 from 4 to 6:40 p.m., the Korean National Demonstration Team will take to the mats to not only show off what they’ve got, but also teach others (blue belt and up) via a seminar. The event will be hosted at the First Korean Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, 400 N. Bethlehem Pike in Ambler. The demonstration will begin at 4 p.m. with a seminar following 5:40 to 6:40 p.m. and is presented by Sky Martial Arts, with locations in North Wales, Dresher, Warrington, and Wayne.
The Ambler Theater will bring the arts to the movie screen as a documentary “Munch: Love, Ghosts, and Lady Vampires” will follow the works of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, best known for his 1893 painting, “The Scream.” This documentary will run 90 minutes with a showtime of Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. (a second showing will be held Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m.).
