Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele confirmed that the suspect shot by Ambler Borough Police Saturday night died of his injuries at Jefferson Abington Hospital.
Steel said police responded to a 911 call at 7:34 p.m. for a suspicious person. Police arrived at Forest Avenue and School Street, where they encountered Robert Aguilar Cholula, 43, of Ambler, who was wielding a large butcher knife, police said.
Officers told Cholula to drop the knife, but he did not comply, police said. Cholula ran toward officers, with one firing his taser at the victim, which did not stop him, police said.
A second officer fired one shot, hitting Cholula, Steele said. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Per protocol for officer-involved shootings in the county, Montgomery County Detectives responded to the scene and are investigating the shooting.
Initial reports from the scene said Cholula was shot twice in the chest and was armed with two knives.
Officers were not injured in the incident, police said.
