The Whitpain Township Shade Tree Commission is hosting its annual Arbor Day Native Tree Giveaway on Sunday, April 27 at Prophecy Creek Park.
Residents are allowed to pick up trees free of charge, making it an ideal opportunity for families, gardeners, and environmental enthusiasts to contribute to reforestation efforts on their properties. The trees are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so participants are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection. Proof of Whitpain Township residency is required to participate, ensuring the benefits of the giveaway are reserved for the local community.
In 2024, the Shade Tree Commission distributed 450 native trees to residents during the Arbor Day event. Last year featured Canopy Species including Acer Rubrum (Red Maple), Magnolia Accuminata (Cucumber Tree), Magnolia Macropylla (Big Leaf Magnolia), Quercus Able (White Oak), Quercus Bicolor (Swamp White Oak), Platanus Occidentalis (American Sycamore), Nyssa Sylvatica (Black Gum) and Pinus Strobus (White Pine).
Understory and Flowering Species included Cladrastis Kentukea (Yellowwood), Carpinus Caroliniana (American Hornbeam), Cersis Canadensis (Redbud), Cornus Florida (Flowering Dogwood), Magnolia Virginiana (Sweetbay Magnolia), and Oxydendron Arboreum (Sourwood).
It’s an educational event that not only provides residents with valuable resources to green their properties but also fosters a sense of community, as participants come together to celebrate and contribute to Whitpain’s environmental health.
