The Lower Gwynedd Township Police Department is warning its residents about recent reports of a phone scam involving Bitcoin.
According to the complaints, scammers are posing as court or Sheriff’s Office representatives, claiming that a resident missed a court date and must pay a fine or face arrest, and requests payment via Bitcoin.
The police said that all calls have been related to the Montgomery County Courthouse.
If you receive the call, police advise you to: hang up immediately, do not provide personal or financial information and report the call to a local law enforcement agency.
Legitimate court officials will communicate through mail and will never request sensitive information.
