Emergency crews responded to the Janssen Research and Development building, located at 1400 McKeon Road in Lower Gwynedd Township Tuesday afternoon around 4:05 p.m. for hazardous materials incident inside the facility, according to reports.
The occupants inside the building were forced to evacuate the premises after three to five gallons of acetonitrile spilled. The spill was contained to inside the building and did not spread elsewhere, according to officials.
Acetonitrile is a colorless, volatile, flammable, and toxic liquid with a sweet, ether-like odor. It serves as a solvent in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other chemicals.
HAZMAT teams, as well as emergency crews from the Second Alarmers Rescue Squad and Community Ambulance Association of Ambler responded to the scene.
