The Wissahickon Board of School Directors announced the appointment of Dr. Mwenyewe Dawan as Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2025, replacing Dr. James Crisfield.
Recently, Dr. Dawan published an update about what has been happening over the summer months at the Wissahickon School District, including outdoor office hours.
In her piece, featured on the WSD website, it reads the following:
I’m honored to write to you in my new role as Superintendent of Wissahickon School District. Having served as Assistant Superintendent, I already feel deeply connected to our schools and community – and I’m excited to continue this journey with you.
My first two weeks in this new role has been both busy and energizing. I’ve spent time collaborating closely with our new Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Gardiner, to ensure a smooth transition. Together, Dr. Gardiner and I have been visiting our summer programs to connect with students and staff. I’m also continuing the engagement efforts outlined in my entry plan, which include leadership development opportunities with our administrative team, as well as outreach to local faith-based leaders and local emergency services partners.
Please see below for opportunities to connect with me this summer, review recent updates about federal funding, and read about our upcoming back to school communications.
Let’s Connect This Summer
I’d love to connect with you this summer at one of my “outdoor office hours” – a relaxed opportunity to chat, ask questions, and share ideas in an informal setting. No agenda, no speeches – just conversation and connection.
Dr. Dawan’s Outdoor Office Hours (weather permitting)
Tuesday, July 29, outdoor evening meetup at 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 6, outdoor MORNING meetup at 7:30 a.m.
USDE’s Decision on Title II & III Funding
The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) recently announced a temporary “pause” in the distribution of Title II and Title III federal funding. Title II supports professional development efforts and Title III provides resources for English learners.
Although Title II and III funds have not been eliminated, we – like many districts – are awaiting further guidance from the USDE. In the meantime, we’re advocating for these federal funds to be released, and we’re developing contingency plans for 2025-26 in case the current pause leads to reduced or discontinued funding.
We will continue to monitor updates closely to inform future budget planning. Further updates on this matter will be discussed at the public Board meeting in August.
Back to School Communications
Important back to school information will be shared beginning on Monday, August 4. Look for an email entitled “Things to Expect for the 2025-2026 School Year” which will include details about the timeline for accessing teacher/class assignments, transportation, and much more.
You can also visit our Back to School webpage for information.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. I look forward to seeing some of you this summer!
With gratitude,
Dr. Mwenyewe Dawan
Superintendent
Wissahickon School District
