Known for her compassion, resilience and patience, Tamara Gary, a caregiver at the Jenkintown branch of Right at Home, recently received the company’s Mid-Atlantic Region Caregiver of the Year award.
Gary was recognized for her kindness and unwavering commitment to her clients in all situations whether navigating a power outage or comforting a client through a health scare.
Both her colleagues and the families of her clients say she makes people feel safe, seen and cared for.
Right at Home offers in-home care to seniors and adults with disabilities who want to live independently.
Gary talked to Access Network about what the award means to her and why she is so passionate about caregiving.
On receiving the award, she said, “I was surprised, grateful, really happy. It is really nice to be recognized.”
Gary started at Right at Home in January 2023. Prior to that, she worked as a direct support professional for a different company.
“My favorite part of caregiving, she said, “is making my clients feel comfortable and helping them with their regular routine.”
“The most challenging part is being emotionally attached and watching a client decline,” she added.
Before becoming a professional caregiver, Gary was her mom’s caregiver. That was what gave her the confidence to make it her career.
Gary said it is a challenging but worthwhile career choice: “It is not easy. It is a lot of hard work, and you have to be selfless and patient. Sometimes you must put your clients’ needs before your own.”
Her advice for anyone considering becoming a caregiver: “Have an open mind, open heart, be professional, be patient and be willing to learn.”
Founded in 1995, most Right at Home offices are independently owned and operated and directly employ and supervise all caregiving staff.
