A motorcycle accident in Whitemarsh Township has multiple lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s traffic at a standstill Friday night as first responders tend to those involved. The injuries required a helicopter to land in the vicinity to transport at least one rider.
According to county dispatch, calls were received around 8:36 p.m. on Friday, June 13 in Whitemarsh Township. Reports of a “large amount of motorcycles,” guessed to be around 15 in number, were called into emergency services by witnesses who said the drivers were weaving in and out of vehicle traffic.
According to those at the scene, one motorcyclist overturned his bike and was laying on the ground after striking a car with his bike. Both the bike and the involved car were reportedly on fire after the collision.
Witnesses said that the bike remained on fire, and that the driver, a male, was down on the ground, but in and out of consciousness. An emergency medical transport by helicopter is landing in the southbound lanes nearby to transport the biker. The ramp of Interstate 476 northbound to Interstate 276 eastbound is closed, as is the ramp from Interstate 276 eastbound to Route 309, in addition to both, intersecting Interstates.
The accident is slowing traffic throughout the vicinity, with lanes closed near the two interstates, impacting ramps to Route 309, as well. The incident occurred, according to dispatch, near mile marker 337.5 in the eastbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area, as traffic is projected to be blocked or slowed in the area. More information will be published as it is made available.
