Keeping your car safe from break-ins starts with simple precautions that make your vehicle a less tempting target for thieves.

With a recent uptick in vehicle break-ins across Ambler Borough, the Ambler Borough Police Department recently announced it is investigating numerous crimes of this nature. Residents are urged to take extra precautions to keep their cars secure and valuables out of sight.

According to the Ambler Borough Police Department, these kinds of thefts are occurring not only in Ambler, but all the surrounding municipalities. Thieves are using high tech methods to steal vehicles, such as transmitter or relay devices that send the information from the fob to another thief who uses that information to gain access and start your vehicle.

"This is all happening while your car keys are still on your kitchen counter," the Ambler Borough Police Department wrote.

Simple ways to protect your car from thieves and transmitters:

  1. Do not leave your keys near doors or windows.
  2. Purchase a Faraday bag online to store your keys while you are at home. This will block the thief from using the transmitter or relay device
  3. If possible, turn off keyless entry to your vehicle
  4. Use a steering wheel lock
  5. Constantly update your vehicles software

If you see someone suspicious wandering around your neighborhood at night call the police when it's occurring not the next day.

"The days of leaving homes and vehicles unlocked are no more," Ambler Borough Police Department wrote.
