Lower Gwynedd Township is developing a Strategic Pedestrian Access Plan to enhance walkability and connectivity throughout the community. This initiative aims to establish a thoughtful, forward-looking framework that will guide the Township’s decision-making regarding the planning, construction, and improvement of sidewalks, trails, and pedestrian crossings.

The overarching goal of the plan is to create a comprehensive document that will inform how pedestrian infrastructure is incorporated into future land development projects. Once finalized, the Strategic Pedestrian Access Plan will become a key reference in the Township’s standard review process for land development applications. By doing so, the Township ensures that new developments align with the broader vision of a more pedestrian-friendly environment. In addition to shaping future projects, the plan will also serve as a foundational tool when seeking external funding through state, federal, or private grant programs that support pedestrian and active transportation infrastructure.

A summary of the draft plan is presented in the map below. This map outlines several key components:

  • Priority routes where new pedestrian accessways are needed to close existing gaps in the network;
  • Current mid-block crossings that have been identified for evaluation and potential improvement;
  • Suggested locations for future pedestrian crossings based on connectivity needs and safety considerations;
  • Community nodes, such as schools, parks, libraries, commercial centers, and transit stops—areas that typically generate high foot traffic and are important destinations for residents and visitors alike.

The development of the draft plan has been a collaborative effort, incorporating feedback from multiple Township advisory bodies. Presentations and discussions have been held with the Planning Commission, the Parks & Recreation Board, the Environmental Advisory Council, and the Board of Supervisors. Each of these groups has provided input to help shape a plan that reflects the needs and priorities of the broader community.

The draft Strategic Pedestrian Access Plan is now available for further public review and comment. Community members are encouraged to share their feedback before the final presentation of the plan to the Board of Supervisors. The public comment period will remain open through the date of the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, which will begin at 7:00 PM. Residents can submit written comments via email to contactus@lowergwynedd.org or attend the meeting in person to offer input during the public comment portion.

The Township values the voices of its residents and encourages all community members to participate in shaping a more walkable and connected Lower Gwynedd.
