Lower Gwynedd Township has announced the construction of the Old Bethlehem Pike Bridge Replacement and Streambank Restoration projects, set for 2025.

The bid for the bridge replacement has been awarded to G&B Construction, Inc. as of January 6, 2025.

Bridge Replacement

The existing culvert on Old Bethlehem Pike, located behind the Township Building, has been deemed structurally compromised after engineering assessments, leading to a weight restriction that prevents large vehicles from crossing. The current single-span stone masonry arch bridge will be replaced with a pre-cast concrete arch bridge, featuring textured pattern concrete walls for aesthetic appeal and durability.

Streambank Restoration

Alongside the bridge project, a streambank restoration project will be undertaken to address the erosion of streambanks on both sides of Willow Run, a tributary of Wissahickon Creek, near Old Bethlehem Pike. The restoration aims to combat the effects of "urban creek syndrome" in the Wissahickon Creek, which faces issues such as flash flooding, pollution, impaired habitat, and diminished biodiversity. By stabilizing the streambanks, the project will restore the natural function of the area, reduce sediment and pollutants entering the stream, and enhance water quality across the watershed.

Funding

The projects are funded through separate grants:

  • The bridge replacement is supported by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Local Share Account Grant.
  • The streambank restoration is funded through the DCED Watershed Restoration and Protection Program Grant and Montgomery County ARPA Funds, secured through the Wissahickon Clean Water Partnership.

These improvements aim to provide long-term benefits to both infrastructure and environmental health in the community.
