Career Day at school is always an exciting event that provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of professions and career paths. It allows students to hear from professionals in various fields, ask questions, and gain valuable insights into what different careers entail.
This event not only helps students discover potential career interests, but also encourages them to think about their future and the steps they need to take to achieve their goals.
Volunteers at Career Day come from many different walks of life. Speakers included alumni, North Montco Technical Career Center students, a Wissahickon High School student, and dozens of parents and community members who shared their personal stories, the paths they took to get to where they are, the challenges they faced, and the rewards they experience in their work.
But the ones that work in fields of emergency response, like police offices and firemen, always seem to garner the children's interest more so than the other professions. So when the Whitpain Township Police officers volunteered their time at Wissahickon Middle School, 500 Houston Road, Lower Gwynedd Township, as part of the district's Career Day, they had every student's undivided attention. They were part of more than 35 different professionals who showed up to speak to students.
Dressed in full uniform with their badges and guns displayed, the officers looked like superheroes who protect the neighborhood to the children. The Department currently employs a Chief of Police, two lieutenants, six sergeants, 23 patrol officers, and three detectives. Now, it's looking for its next recruiting class.
"Thank you to the Wissahickon School District for having us at the Middle School for this year's Career Day," Whitpain Township Police Department said. "We spoke to students about what it means and what it takes to become a Police Officer. We hope that some of these young minds will consider our career in the future."
The officers spoke to students about their daily routines, the difference between an officer, lieutenant, and detectives, and even went into detail about how to use drones.
Each student participated in four different career sessions, including healthcare, technology, engineering, arts, business, law enforcement, marketing and more.
Typically, the school aims to provide speakers from the following fields:
