Modern case management system services will give the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office an upgrade after county commissioners authorized a more than $1.28 million contract on Thursday.

The roughly $1.28 million five-year agreement with the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Axon Enterprises Inc. aims to implement a myriad of services ranging from electronic records management to data collection, according to the agreement. Funding was obtained from the county’s general-operational budget and the contract stipulates five optional annual renewal terms.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele stressed the seven-figure contract will aid in a system overhaul to “streamline operations” as well as increase accuracy and transparency.

“The support of that contract to implement a modern system is critical to our office and our needs,” Steele said on Thursday. “For a modern prosecution office, it’s not just a tool, it’s a necessity to move forward in so many ways.”

Eight firms submitted bids to a previously advertised request for proposals. The roughly $1.28 million contract was included in a 12-item package totaling more than $1.73 million.

North Wales mayor signs reading of proclamation

In other business, four Montgomery County middle school students were acknowledged for their efforts placing second in the National Middle School Math Competition earlier this month.

Max Baxter, a Lower Merion School District sixth grader; Tyler Schaffer, a Wissahickon School District sixth grader; Tony Wu, an Upper Merion School District seventh grader, and Sadie Zavada, a seventh grader at North Penn School District were recognized as North Wales Mayor Neil McDevitt, who is deaf, signed the proclamation during Thursday’s board meeting.

“Thank you to all the commissioners for welcoming me here. I did a quick Google search, and this is the first time that a deaf elected official is doing a proclamation in the United States, in American Sign Language,” McDevitt said. “Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”

“Thank you, Mayor Neil for the proclamation,” said Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairman Neil Makhija. It’s really fantastic to make history today for you to be able to do that and celebrate our mathletes here in Montco.”

McDevitt shared information pertaining to the premier Montgomery County Intermediate Unit Middle School Mathletes as they prepared to compete.

“They met weekly to practice not just the mathematical concepts used in the competition but how to support each other as a team,” McDevitt said.

Hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, the MCIU Middle School Mathletes participated in the April 5 competition in upstate New York. Max and Sadie also competed individually during the competition, placing first and fourth, respectively, according to the proclamation.

The next Montgomery County Board of Commissioners meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 15 on the eighth floor of One Montgomery Plaza, 425 Swede St. Those interested in attending can also do so virtually. Visit montgomerycountypa.gov for more information.
