Gail Fox is the upcoming artist at Art in the Storefront, 41 E. Butler Ave.
An artist reception is planned for Friday, May 16, at the storefront from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The community is encouraged to attend.
“For me, there was never a need to search for a subject, but to simply locate places in nature that begged to be recorded,” said Fox. Her first exhibited work was a tree, painted at the age of five, that was part of a traveling exhibition of children’s art curated by the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Painting alongside fields, in the woods or at a stream’s edge, she finds that the dynamic rhythm of nature and its ever-changing light engages her. For Fox, nature and its intensity, is the ultimate source of art. Seascapes, landscapes, cloudscapes and everything in between are of interest to Fox. Japanese art inspires her paintings of birds, koi and flowers. Travels in Italy revived childhood dreams of fairytale castles and mythic narratives where birds speak, horses fly, and sculptures come to life.
Born in Philadelphia, Fox maintains a studio in Wyncote. She studied at the PA Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She received her master’s degree from the University of the Arts, Phila. Her list of exhibitions is lengthy and impressive. Awards include the Cadwalader Prize, the Bergman Purchase Award, and the Prize for Landscape Painting, selected by Andrew Wyeth at PAFA.
